Highest environmental standards to be met on GWF
At each stage of the project, the Gippsland Water Factory Alliance is committed to ensuring the highest environmental standards for construction are in place. A Construction Environment Officer is present to check that construction activities along the transfer system and at the Maryvale site are carried out according to environmental best-practice.
Some of the environmental activities taking place on the project include:
- Making sure the excavation equipment is cleaned before arriving on site, to avoid the spread of weeds and other non-native species;
- Encouraging natural revegetation of stockpiles to reduce wind blown dust and erosion;
- Recycling of construction and general waste
- Ensuring that the levels of noise from construction are kept to a minimum and restricted to daytime hours (7am-6pm);
- Developing environment maps for each construction site to show the areas that are to be protected, avoided or used for other purposes; and
- Making sure all staff receive training on the environmental aspects of the project.
